Everything you need to know about food and drink in Liverpool.

The A-Z of Great Liverpool Coffee

Once upon a time, or at least in the very beginnings of this website, I would have spent hours scouring the back of my brain, maps of the city and the digital yellow pages in order to find a coffee shop for every letter of the alphabet. My A-Z of Liverpool pizza, for example, was fairly successful, and I’m not too proud to admit I absolutely smashed the Burger A-Z* and the Liverpool Christmas Gift Guide. Whilst I had intended to do something similar for my ultimate list of Liverpool Coffee Shops it turns out most of them begin with the same letter ( its ‘c’ ...unsurprisingly). So, instead of thinking of places just for the sake of it I have instead decided to put together a select list of my favourite spots for a coffee, ones I actually visit and love and those others are always raving about. Enjoy!

Unbe-leaf-able Stuff

Artisane- Fresh coffee to take out and a mountain of pastries to take along with you. It’s what breakfast dreams are made of.

Bold Street Coffee- Great coffee, good vibes and hash browns good enough to rival the Golden Arches. Hangover haven if ever you’re in need!

Carlisi- Criminally underrated Italian cafe on Dale Street. Espressos at the bar and freshly made cannoli on the counter. Always full of Italians- need I say more? If I lived closer I’d go every day.

Chapters of Us- Bright and breezy sun trap located inside Baltic Creative Digital House. They’re dog- friendly and use local Neighbourhood coffee beans so it’s the ideal place for a catch-up with your mates. Cool, indie event space with regular pop ups, good food and lively ‘Sunday Sessions’.

Crosby Coffee- One of the most iconic places to grab a brew and only a short walk away from the beach! They supply most of the city with their beans so the quality speaks for itself.

Cocomo - Hidden, family owned gem not far from Allerton Road. GREAT food. Coffee to take out and there’s a little secret garden in the back.

Coffee and Fandisha- Currently in the middle of a refurb but definitely one to visit when they’re back open. Effortlessly cool space up in the Baltic District.

Ditto- There seems to be an abundance of great coffee around the Baltic Triangle area. Ditto is a teeny tiny little addition to Jamaica Street with locally roasted beans and a seriously tempting treats counter. They have a few other locations around the UK and if you like what you’re drinking you can get a bag of their beans to take home with you.

Dereks- Newest joint on the block but still an excellent edition to the list. They use Crosby Coffee for their NY-style sandwich bar and do a great iced coffee, too. If you want to make a meal of it grab yourself a Gabagool sub and make all your co-workers green with envy. See my review here.

Fika - Swedish inspired coffee shop in the South of the city famous for their ‘Thought of the Day’ A-boards and obscenely calorific sweet treats. The name literally means ‘a coffee and cake break’ which we all need a bit of from time to time!

Habitual- Berry St bakery and coffee shop owned by two fabulous women. Sticky buns and breakfast sandwiches along with some great, speciality coffee.

Lovelocks- Gorgeous place run by gorgeous people. Great coffee, homemade food and an inclusive, designated safe space for all. Find them right by St John’s Gardens.

Mother Espresso- Ironically located inside The Tea Factory on Wood Street, Mother is an ultra minimal, urban coffee spot with a surprisingly sophisticated small plates menu. Need somewhere cool to work? This is the spot.

One Percent Forest- Tiny Scandi cafè in the heart of Woolton. Dog friendly with a small menu of cakes waffles and hot dogs. If, like me, you love an iced brew in the summer months they’ll sell you four litres of the stuff to take home. Picnic, anyone?

Press Bros- Currently based at The Baltic Market but soon to be opening their own place on Lark Lane. They’re absolute kings of the espresso martini but their hot stuff is pretty great too. They’re also the friendliest guys ever- don’t think I’ve ever seen them not smiling!

The Quarter- Georgeous little sun trap on Faulkner Street, perfect place for a coffee based catch-up and the food is great too. Holiday on the continent vibes.

Ropes and Twines- The ultimate ‘day to night’ hangout spot on Bold Street specialising in great coffee and great wine. Always buzzing with people but has that kind of gorgeous laid-back atmosphere you could spend all day in.

Rococo- My favourite coffee shop before I knew I even liked coffee. It’s hidden up a set of stairs of Church Street and is always the ‘go-to’ place for fuelling up mid shopping trip. If you’re a people watcher grab a high seat by the window or sneak off to one of the back rooms to get cosy and read a book.

Root- Speciality coffee shop on the corner of Seel St and Hanover with the motto ‘because life is just too short for bad coffee’. Regularly changing coffee offering with all the gizmos and gadgets you’d expect from expert brewers.

Red Berry Club- Jamaica Street vintage meets dead food coffee. Cute, cool, cosy.

Ryde- Another hybrid! Bike repair shop meets café. Opposite the Baltic Market but much more chill. Perfect spot to refuel mid bike ride or just to relax in the sun.

Skaus- Another Scandinavian entry (do we see a pattern here?) Baltic-born start up famous for their Scouse, hassleback potatoes and great coffee. Pair your morning brew with their crab and avocado on rye and thank me later.

Thoughtfully- I believe this used to be the former home of Cow & Co and is always suggested multiple times when I ask you guys for tips. Everything you could need in a coffee shop: an outdoor patio, a counter full of sweet treats and cute dogs aplenty.

92 Degrees- Small batch coffee roasted in the Georgian Quarter. There’s no less than THREE locations in Liverpool alone and you can proudly support Project Waterfall with every cup you buy.
