What's the scoop on Aigburth's newest arrival?
Location & Venue:
Like many taking advantage of Lark Lane's seeming revival, The Old School House is amongst the newest to join the road. Housed in, unsurprisingly, an old school house, it's now a bright and airy bar and restaurant space with cool, minimal interiors that remind me a lot of Rudys. There's a humongous bar, dedicated dining area and loads of bar stools with TV's in every direction if you're struggling to peel you other half away from the match.
Food & Drink:
I like to give new venues the benefit of the doubt so instead of saying I found the menu a little confused we'll instead go with 'varied'. Small plates seemingly span the width of the globe offering everything from Bavarian pretzels, Southern-fried tofu, and preserved lemon hummus. We try some super messy but tasty wings in a Korean marinade alongside their greatest Franken-creation of Indian style nachos with pulled chilli duck. Mad? Yes. Delicious? Also yes.
The main courses are a bit more 'pub traditional' and they do a cracking fish and chips. I, of course, order Scottish lobster tail and frites just because it's there and whilst it makes for good eating it does seem a little out of place. If you here for drinks you might be better ordering from their wood-fired pizza menu, and the daytime menu has an enticing selection of sandwiches. For dessert we share bananas foster which turns out to be something else entirely-a banana cheesecake, deep fried in filo with a bourbon caramel sauce. It's definitely a menu that'll please if not keep you on your toes throughout.
There are, of course, cask ales and craft beers as well as a cool cocktail list. The waitress recommended a short and strong apple and chili concoction that left my eyeballs tingling in the best kind of way. They're around £9 a pop though so go easy!

Price: £££- We spent around £80 for a casual mid-week tea. Two starters, two mains (granted, I had a lobster), one dessert to share and a drink each.
Conclusion: Cool, chilled vibes and a great place for a drink on Lark Lane. Food is great and the bar snacks well worth an order but might not be the place for a three-courser.
