Everything you need to know about food and drink in Liverpool.

Silk Rd

Take a little walk down by the Liver Buildings today and you just might stumble upon Liverpool's latest addition to the tapas circle- Silk Rd. Tucked off in a little square behind Oh Me Oh My, Silk Road's vibrant new restaurant offers a haven for sun-seekers escaping the miserable February weather. Sit with a drink in hand, watch the rain drip down the huge glass walls and choose from a menu designed to whisk you off to anywhere in the world.

Named after an ancient trade route connecting different areas of the continents (thanks, Google), Silk Rd offers tapas from different places across the globe 'from the Pacific to the Med'. Despite my initial inclinations to stick to the Spanish side of things, we eventually picked a variety of plates to share (and test) between us.

The Food:

Bread, oil and vinegar.

Parmesan and truffle fries.  I don't really know what part of the Silk Rd
these are supposed to be from but I don't really care.Crispy, salty, cheesy & delicious.

Chorizo in a sweet mix of red wine, garlic and honey.

Laos Money Bags filled with minced pork, veggies and spices.
I can only apologise for how blurry this is- I was excited to eat them.

Probably my least favourite of an otherwise great selection- garlic and chilli prawns.
The prawns were super soft but the sauce/oil lacked a bit of a punch- ya girl likes her garlic.

I've been searching for decent croquettes since I went to Spain. These are the REAL DEAL.
Super soft bechamel with Iberian ham, crispy breadcrumbs and a smoky paprika mayo.
I was fully going to order a second portion but I decided to save room for....

Desserts! Eton Mess

& Raspberry Cheesecake. A big creamy pot of joy.

The Verdict:

I'll hold my hands up and be honest here- I heard the menu was a mix of different cuisines and instantly had horrible flashbacks to Red Hot World Buffet. Remember that? I shudder. In reality, I was happily proved wrong by a diverse menu, cooked well with loads of flavour. The restaurant is like sunshine in a box and had me dreaming of those sticky, summer days ahead.
I'd absolutely go back for those croquettes any day of the week.
